Posted February 8, 2008. I have an SM86, and I've used Beta 87's, but my preference is actually the SM87. I think the SM87 sound better than my SM86, and not as harsh as a Beta 87. Kind of the best of both world, IMO. I rarely use my SM86 anymore. The Beta 87 is a condenser and the SM58 is a dynamic. The Beta 87 has a supercardioid polar pattern and the SM58 has a cardioid polar pattern. And also The Beta87 is a much more open sound for vocals.
